Visa applications to Britain have increased by 57% in the past five years, the annual report of the UKvisas agency revealed yesterday.

In 2006-7, some 2.75 million applications were received, representing a year-on-year increase of 8%.

My, we must all be most gratified at this unexpected and major boost for our tourist trade, mustn’t we?

People overstaying their welcome? Of course not, what an unkind and positively incorrect thought.

Mind you, I suppose we must be grateful that they bother to apply for a Visa at all: at least that may rake in a few quid.
