One of the privileges of living in The Hague, as I did for some time, is that one has the chance of dropping into The Mauritshuis Gallery and feasting one’s eyes on what I consider to be a painting sans pareil, Johannes Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring.

It combines four elements: purity, freshness, radiance and sensuality. When seeing the painting in the flesh each of these sensations almost overwhelms you, For each of us her look says something different, I am sure.

If in The Hague, I commend readers to take the trouble to visit her. The Mauritshuis is a delightful little gallery and the experience of viewing its treasures is always an intimate one.
