The Herald reports (here) that Alex Salmond wants to turn his hand away from salami slicing so as to pick up his fish slice instead by ‘taking over’ leadership of negotiations with the EU over what happens to fish caught in British Territorial Waters.

A clever wheeze but to English voters, might one suggest, totally unacceptable. Such power as the UK has over our fish (and it is little enough,The Huntsman accepts, after the disgraceful surrender of control over fishersies policy to the EU) affects the entire UK and must remain a matter for the UK Government, not for the representative of a mere 10% of the population who has no mandate whatever from 50 million English voters.

If Macavity gives in on this one, it will do incalculable harm to Labour’s interests in England but also to the Union. Labour should quickly move to kill this idea.
